As expected of a ryokan so don’t expect 5 star hotel quality but definitely comfortable and clean.

Having been to Izumo before and knowing it would not disappoint, I decided to take my family for another vacation in January. We stayed at Nipponia Izumo - Hirata Cotton Road for three nights. It is a former traditional sake brewery house converted into a kominka style hotel. Situated on a quiet historical sake and soy sauce business street, the hotel not only provided a unique home sweet home service but also amazing fine dining experience. Their in-house chef made each meal using local products to create feasts that delighted the senses. I highly recommend this hidden gem of an accommodation if you do visit Izumo.

Boasting luggage storage space, this property also provides guests with a picnic area. Rooms come with a balcony with mountain views and free WiFi. This is a gem in the mountains not to be missed. There was tea and a snack waiting for us every afternoon in our room. We could see the beautifully carved temple and gardens from our room window. The meals were delicious! Many little dishes to make your mouth water served in our private dining room by the hosts who were exceedingly polite and friendly and explained what everything was. The baths could be taken privately with a partner. The bath was very clean as were the accommodations. A short hike to the top of the mountain gave beautiful views of the ocean and the Daisen volcanic mountain. This also went by the beautiful temple, which offers meditation sessions. There were two small stores nearby selling delicious sweets nearby. We cannot say enough good things about kouyoukan ryokan and it's hosts! A wonderful place to slow down and relax.

The rooms were spacious for myself and my adult son and young daughter. I loved that they provided pajamas - the staff were super friendly (although one of the staff members seemed to be irritated with me when I was trying to speak to him, but he later did apologize - the language barrier was perhaps frustrating for me to relay to him my proper concern and this must have frustrated him as he took my questioning as impatience on my part - he told me to "Just Wait!" in a very annoyed tone with me - I'm okay though as I realize I am not used to their ways and perhaps it is considered very rude to try to speak up when I think they are not hearing me properly. In any case, overall, the other staff members were perfect and extremely helpful to me. I would definitely stay here again!
