Near the beautiful River Eden, in the ancient town of Appleby in Westmorland, this traditional 17th century coaching inn offers free Wi-Fi and en suite rooms.

The Royal Oak Appleby is rated as a 4-star Silver Inn by VisitBritain, the tourist board of the United Kingdom. Fully refurbished during 2008 and early 2009, all of the rooms have high-quality beds and en suite shower rooms.

I generally choose hotels rather than Inns, but was impressed by the value for money of this one so gave it a go. I wasn't disappointed! The room was very well appointed, clean & very comfortable. Bathroom was exceptional and large compared with a lot of hotels. We stayed at the Inn for evening dinner and chose the steak which was the best we'd tasted for a long time. Highly recommended! The breakfast too was very good. Overall, I could not fault our stay, would definitely recommend this Inn and would certainly choose to stay here again.

The breakfast was a typical rural UK breakfast and the location was perfectly suited for my work destination

Perfect for rustic breaks in the countryside, an Inn is a small property with basic hotel services and typically traditional decor. Inns are fully licensed and have a bar providing food and drinks in the evening, which distinguishes them from country or guest houses.

A fabulous 2 night stay at The New Inn 1730. Breakfasts and evening meal were great with the added bonus of a Sunday roast that was scrummy. Room suited us perfectly as friends on a walking trip with a double bed in one part of the room and an additional room with the single bed and ensuite. Warm welcome from the host each time we saw him - thank you Laurie. We will definitely revisit in the future. Louise

We stayed at the New Crown Inn last year and the experience wasn't brilliant, I was very reluctant to go back but the location for where we were working is a bonus. When we arrived you could feel the difference immediately, very friendly and welcoming. We had a very enjoyable stay this time. The rooms are very comfortable and clean.... the beds are a bit low but I'm told that's being looked into. We do plan to return for our next business trip to the area, we will also recommend to anyone else from the business.

Spotlessly clean and cosy. The bed was very comfortable. Staff were efficient, super nice and friendly, and extremely helpful. Food was very good . Wine was really good and reasonably priced. Plenty of on road parking in front of the Inn. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Nicely furnished, blending modern with the inn’s traditional features. I didn’t have my dog with me but if there is a more dog friendly establishment out there I’d be surprised!

It really is a castle and the bedroom was amazing. The grounds are lovely and the dinner and breakfast rooms were atmospheric so the whole visit was great.
