A traditional East Sussex inn in the South Downs, Ye Olde Smugglers Inne dates back to the 14th century and retains plenty of its original character. A cosy fireside bar and restaurant complement the bespoke rooms, which all benefit from free Wi-Fi.

For hikers arriving after a 25 km slog along the South Downs Way, the Inne is a veritable paradise. We started sitting down with a pint of good Sussex ale to refuel our weary legs before ascending the stairs to our room. The room was spacious and clean and with good beds. Then we had a wonderful meal (with Sussex ale) in the charming pub. Alfriston is a beautiful and quiet town, and we slept like babies. We felt welcome and have no complaints!

The Ram Inn features a garden, terrace, a restaurant and bar in Lewes. Located around 13 km from AMEX Stadium, the inn with free WiFi is also 19 km away from Victoria Gardens. The property is non-smoking and is located 4.6 km from Glyndebourne Opera House.

The Ram Inn is a unique experience. Tucked away in a peaceful village in Sussex, it transports you into a serene and creative space surrounded by minimal but eclectic furnishings, a big desk to write at and a deep bath to restore oneself. Downstairs it the perfect picture-book English pub serving delicious local produce from the gin through to the venison. I even managed to walk someone else’s dog up through the church yard. The staff were kind and helpful.

We were in a “Hitch-hikers” room. Next to the main building with bedroom doors that opened over the lawns. Space a little tight in the bedroom but ok and bathroom well designed. Had to leave early for ferry so can’t comment on breakfast. Had dinner at Cricketers’. Good venue. Walkable. But on main road. Advise booking. Allow half hour to ferry. Potentially busy road with occasional hay cart! Friendly owners.

Upon arrival The Rose Cottage Inn had ample parking and the instructions given to us for a contactless welcome and check-in were very clear. Our room was lovely and had a view to the garden and the hills beyond. We were welcomed by the lovely hosts at breakfast and had a lovely cooked meal to set us up for our long walk.

The Rose Cottage Inn (which is not currently an Inn) is in a beautiful location. The apartment is comfortable and has a little table outside with wonderful views over fields towards the South Downs. We were also invited to sit in the (ex) pub garden which has fabulous views too. The village is delightful and within an easy walk of the South Downs Way. You also have the cultural attractions of Charleston and Berwick Church within walking distance.
