Carlisle Castle is not your medieval German Schloss but a...
Carlisle Castle is not your medieval German Schloss but a serious fortification. The keep is full of rooms to explore and good information about what they were for. The outer yard has 19th century buildings where modern regiments were stationed. One building houses the military museum which is included in the price of the overall admission.

Some incredible history here (i.e. the Jacobite rebellion), but the castle itself is jumbled up. I couldn't make any sense of its layout, but then...who am I;'). Nice that you get to wander about freely, not roped in like at Edinburgh or the Tower.

Carlisle Castle is intact with excellent displays about the part it played in the Scottish border wars, but the Army still uses part of the grounds and some areas are off-limits. Nearby Brougham Castle is an evocative ruin, but you are able to climb most of the way up the tower and the interpretative info is fascinating.
