Only a place for a short visit.
Only a place for a short visit. Built in 1386 the castle hosted both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and later Charles I. However, having been a Royalist stronghold, the castle was destroyed by the Parliamentarians in 1646 and only the twin-towered gatehouse remains standing and it's not possible to go inside. It would be a nice place for kids to let off a bit of steam and maybe have a picnic. Car park is free; short, uphill walk from the car park to the building on an uneven path.

We initially booked for one night but it was so lovely we stayed for three. Staff were extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed food and drinks on the terrace outside the bar (the weather was exceptionally warm). We weren’t golfers, but the park was lovely and it was fun to watch the putting. Easy access to plenty of paths nearby for walking and running, and Donnington Castle is a short walk away.
